27 Sep A Moxon Vise Hardware Kit from Woodcraft
The WoodRiver brand kit (item 179227, $169.99) allows a woodworker to build a two-screw vise using the hardware, wood and instructions supplied. The double screw vise has been around for centuries. It is referred to as a Moxon vise because of Joseph Moxon, who described the double screw vise in his book titled Mechanick Exercises: Or, The Doctrine Of Handy-Works, which was published in 1703. A reproduction is currently available from Toolerama Press.
Here’s how Woodcraft describes the vise kit: “The WoodRiver® Moxon vise hardware kit with hard maple billets is a great way to make one of these extremely useful vises. Often the height of a workbench may be too low for comfort, depending on the task. Building your own Moxon vise is the perfect way to save your back while elevating your work and hand tool skills. Great for cutting dovetail or mortise and tenon joinery. Make it any size to best suit your needs.”
The hardware kit contains two 5″ hand wheels, two 3/4″ x 8″ Acme threaded screws for rapid opening and closing, four Acme threaded nuts and four washers. The FAS (firsts & seconds, a clear grade) kiln dried hard maple jaw blanks are planed S2S (surfaced on the two faces), and measure 6-1/2” to 7” wide x 25” and 31” long. Thery’re 1-7/8” thick.
