15 Jan A polisher and Sander that May Interest Bowl Turners
Woodturners, and especially bowl turners, may be interested in a new, cordless detail sander (2”) and polisher (3”) from Ryobi. Part of the company’s 18V ONE+ battery system, the variable speed tool (item PBF102B, $99 tool only) was designed for compact and lightweight work in tight spaces, especially in the automotive body repair industry. It’s a bit coarse for final finishing on bowls because of the stiffness of the backing pad, but it will handle initial and intermediate grits. It will run up to 60 minutes on a 9 Ah battery (we saw one of those at The home Depot for $159), and it will run for shorter times on smaller 18V ONE+ batteries. The tool has a spindle lock for fast, tool-free accessory changes, and an on-board LED light. There are two speed ranges – 0 to 2800 RPM for polishing out a wax finish, and 0 to 7800 RPM for sanding – and a removable auxiliary handle for bigger bowls. It comes with a 3-year limited warranty, three sanding discs, a sanding pad, a foam medium pad, a foam fine pad, a 3” wool pad, and a hook and loop backer pad for polishing. The spindle size is 5/16”.
