A Very Versatile Drill Driver

A new cordless, brushless drill from Metabo answers a lot of woodworkers’ jobsite dilemmas. The very compact BS 18 L BL Q (the stock number is 691184000) comes with the company’s Quick chuck system that lets a user change the chuck in about a second. It comes as a set with a standard chuck and a box of 32 bits (at right in image), without a battery.  One of the bits is a (red colored) extension that makes it easier to reach into tight spots. There are Phillips, square, flat and star bits, plus a ¼” socket drive. A number of clever bit holders (chucks) are available as options, such as the offset and angled versions shown at left in the photo. The drill has an integrated LED work light with a night light function, and a handy belt hook and bit holder that can be fixed either on the right or left side. The drill uses Ultra-M technology, which Metabo says delivers the “highest performance, gentle charging and 3 years of warranty on the battery pack”. The maximum soft torque is 221.3 inch-pounds, and the hard max is 531. The chuck accepts up to ½” shanks.
