07 Feb A Well-Designed Drill Press Table from Woodpeckers
In the New Tool category on the Woodpeckers® website is a drill press table that has been out for about a year now. The DP-PRO installs in minutes on virtually every drill press table on the market, doesn’t interfere with machine adjustments, expands to support longer work and is the first system to effectively integrate dust collection right at the source. There’s a 48” version for $519.99, a 36” model at $499.99, and various other options where a woodworker can purchase part or all of the system. The fence is tall enough to support work vertically as well as horizontally and it works with the company’s new DP-PRO Flip Stops that have a built-in thumb wheel micro-adjustment. The fence also has an integrated dust collection duct with its opening right where chips are created. Just attach a vacuum or dust collector at either end of the fence. The DP-PRO table has extension wings that slide out for extra support and tuck back in tight to the central table and out of the way for storage. The 36″ model is 24″ wide when the wings are tucked in and 36″ with the wings extended. Similarly, the 48″ model is 36″ closed and 48″ extended. The table and extensions are made from full 1″ thick Baltic Birch plywood with black Micro-Dot laminate on both sides. The Micro-Dot surface reduces friction and holds up better to abrasion than smooth laminates. Gradated tracks provide mounting for both the fence and hold-down clamps, and there’s a clearance slot at the front of the track so one can install hold-downs from the front without moving the fence. The replaceable insert is offset so it can be turned 90° rather than replacing it every time it gets chewed up. A newly designed DP-PRO Drawer Base is the foundation of the system. After-market and shop-built drill press tables have always struggled with two issues – attaching the table to the existing drill press table, and then maintaining clearance for the elevation crank. The new drawer base solves both problems and adds a convenient storage drawer at the same time. The bottom has slots that align with most drill press tables, whether it has T-slots or through-slots, diagonal or parallel. Hardware is included. The drawer base elevates the auxiliary table 4″ above the main table, providing clearance for even the longest table elevation cranks. And the drawer can hold drill bits, chuck keys and clamps. DP-PRO Drill Press Tables are made in Strongsville, Ohio. There’s a short video on YouTube™.
