01 Nov Axminster’s Flexible Friend Portable Workbench
The British company Axminster Tools has established itself as a market leader in the mail order tools and machinery industry, and its vision is “to create a global woodworking community”. Among its newest offerings is the Flexible friend workbench (item 107589, $360), which delivers the functionality of a fixed bench, but with both portability and storability. Made of block laminated beechwood for strength, it comes with 4 bench dogs and a vice that opens to 130mm (5.18”). As the name suggests, this workbench is destined to become a friend and support in many situations. It consists of two strong trestles (sawhorses) and a benchtop that is fitted with a side vice. The bench can be assembled in a matter of minutes, and unassembled it takes up little space for storage and is convenient for transportation. The top locks securely to the trestles, forming a rigid and stable workbench. And the company notes that one can even use it as a temporary table in the garden for summer barbecues, when work has finished. The bench is bare wood, and Axminster Tools recommends an oil finish for long term protection. It is shipped flat-packed, so some assembly is required. It weighs 36 kg (about 80 lbs) and measures 1,350 mm x 650 mm x 850 mm tall (approx. 53” x 25-1/2” x 33-1/2”). The top is 30 mm (1.18”) thick.
Axminster Tools delivers to the United States, offers over 16,000 products, and lets U.S. woodworkers ship in dollars. The company says it offers fast shipping to the United States with low rates, lets Americans pay a guaranteed price at checkout (import duty/taxes included), and facilitates easy returns. It has 45 years of experience in exporting worldwide.
