Build a Greene & Greene Rocker at Marc Adams’ School

Classes are in full swing at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in North Franklin, Indiana and registration is still open for Reid Anderson’s October 11-15 class on making a Greene & Greene Gamble rocking chair. The class (item 2021-221cl, $865) covers form lamination, carving and sculptural shaping techniques, haunched mortise and tenon joinery, veneering, and pattern routing. A cut list will be mailed to students so they can bring their own wood. Here’s the beginning of the class description:

The Gamble rocker is based on the elegant chair in the entry of the famous Gamble House in Pasadena, California. Reid will begin with a brief discussion of Greene & Greene to gain a better understanding of their design language and details. From there, students will venture out into chair layout and design creating a road map for the project. Forms will be provided for students to create the laminated rockers. The legs will be shaped and mortised and the stretchers will be formed with angled tenons and cloudlift details. The sculptural arms will be bandsawn and burnished before the carving details are incorporated. Click here for more…
