02 Aug Butcherblock Workbench Tops from Grizzly
Grizzly Industrial is offering a full range of solid wood, edge-glued butcherblock worktops that run from 36” long and 24” wide 120” long and 36” wide. (Note that the catalog lists them as Wide x Deep, which in the latter case is shown as 120” wide and 36” deep.)
The idea here is that woodworkers can make workbench tops from durable, sustainably grown hardwood. They’re all 1-3/4” thick, which is quite adequate for most shop requirements. Serious hand tool users may want to double up on the thickness.
This is a very affordable and sturdy workbench option. The butcherblock is made of solid Parawood (hevea brasiliensis), which is sustainably harvested from rubber plantations after the trees have served their useful function. It comes with an extremely durable, virtually maintenance-free UV coating with a satin sheen that highlights the beautiful golden honey color underneath. It looks a lot like some of the maples.
The planks are mostly plain sawn (also called top, face or surface) grain and are easy to refinish and stain to match. They are completely customizable in shape, size, and color, and some tops can also have some exposed quartersawn (side) grain strips. Grizzly recommends finishing cut edges with polyurethane, and we’ve had success with a wipe-on poly after adequate sanding down through the grits to 320, and then 600 grit and tack clothing between each of the three coats. These heavy-duty tops can also be used for kitchen countertops, cutting boards, and islands.
