18 Feb Change Accessories Faster with These Quick-Change Angle Grinders
If you’re using an angle grinder to carve or shape wood, you may be interested in the new tool-free, quick-change family of grinders from Makita. The X-LOCK quick change system is now available on an 18-Volt brushless 4-1/2” /5″ model (XAG25Z), an 18-Volt 4-1/2”/5” paddle switch model (XAG26Z), and a 4-1/2” corded tool (GA4570). The locking mechanism is integrated into the gear housing, where a click-mount and pull release lever make changing accessories up to five times faster than traditional threaded lock-nut mounting. The system also eliminates the possibility of over or under-tightening a threaded spindle. The XAG25Z delivers 8500 RPM and has a quick guard rotation feature (for left or right access). Spiral bevel gears provide smooth rotation and a more efficient transfer of energy. Both grinders also have a rubberized soft grip and a 3-stage LED gauge to indicate battery charge level. The grinders are also equipped with wire mesh intake covers to help prevent debris from entering the motor. The cordless angle grinders have Automatic Speed Change™, which adjusts speed and torque during operation for maximum performance. Active Feedback-sensing Technology (AFT®) turns the motor off if the rotation speed suddenly slows, or the wheel is forced to stop. Anti-Restart Protection is engineered to prevent motor start up when a battery is inserted with the switch in the ON position. An electric brake on the XAG26 stops the grinding or cut-off wheel in 2 seconds or less, and Extreme Protection Technology (XPT™) provides a protective seal inside the tool for improved dust and moisture resistance by channeling debris away from the tool’s key internal components. The grinders also have soft starting and Star Protection Computer Controls™ for improved tool performance and extended battery life. The cordless tools are powered by Makita’s 18V LXT® Lithium‑Ion battery system. The X-LOCK system seems to have a patented hole design in the accessories and while it’s already available for diamond discs and other accessories, it doesn’t appear compatible with carving tools yet.
