DJ-3 Universal Drilling Jig from Bridge City Tool Works

John Economaki has been at it again. This newest offering from his fertile mind, the DJ-3 is a drilling jig for all kinds of shapes, from spheres to end grain. Bridge City is billing it as “one tool for nine drilling applications”. Made with superb materials including 6061 aircraft grade aluminum alloy, it is also anodized so it will never rust.

The most accurate way to drill holes is to use a guide bushing, and the jig comes with 28 bushings (11 imperial and 17 metric). The DJ-3 can accommodate two bushings for drill bits up to ½” in diameter. For repeatability, the jig has a well-designed stop system that operates on an extension bar, and there’s also an adjustable jaw for off-center drilling. It will self-center on stock up to 12-13/32” wide, and the jaws are configured to hold cylinders and spheres. So, it can drill vertically at the center of the flat face of a board; drill at angles up to 45 degrees into the flat face of a board up to 5-5/16” thick; drill off-center on flat boards; drill on round or tube stock such as dowels and wood turnings; axial drill on round stock – drilling into the end of a dowel; bias drill on square stock – drilling into a corner at 45 degrees; axial drill on square stock – drilling into the end of a square dowel (especially ones that are too long for the drill press); center drill on spheres from 5/16” to 2-3/8” diameter (as in when adding decorative balls to the tops of posts); and drill dowel holes into 45-degree miters (this requires an optional kit).

Basically, the jig is a portable and incredibly accurate drill press. It is listed at $539.
