20 Sep Freud Black Ice 1/2″ Triple Compression CNC Bit
Designed to cut hardwoods and softwoods plus materials such as melamine and laminate, Freud’s new compression bit (item 77-312) has three cutters, a ½” diameter, a ½” shank and is 3-1/2” long. The carbide height is 1-3/4” and the upcut is ½” It’s designed for 24,000 maximum RPM. It delivers an ultra-fine finish and fast cuts in double sided veneers and laminates, and the triple flute design allows very fast feed rates in CNC applications (there’s a feed rate calculator on the website).
This tool has the company’s Black I.C.E. coating for a cool cutting edge and superior chip evacuation. Freud says it’s the industry’s first functional coating, and that it protects the carbide edges by creating a slick, lubricant-like action. Freud says that the combination of Black I.C.E. and Freud TiCo™ Hi-Density Premier solid carbide delivers twice the life and performance of standard uncoated bits. Freud’s triple flute compression spirals allow faster cutting in double-sided panels than standard double flute bits. When the transition between up shear and down shear flutes is centered in the workpiece, these tools produce a perfect finish on both the top and bottom surfaces of panels.
Freud’s huge selection of carbide-tipped and solid carbide double flute straight bits are ideal for grooving, edge-routing and other general purpose routing tasks. The precise hook and shear angles provide fast cutting and a smooth finish in hardwood, softwood, plywood, and composite materials. The tips are relieved to allow for efficient plunge cuts and the bits are designed for use in CNC, hand-held and table-mounted routers.
