30 May Japanese Carving Knife Kit
After stories about CNCs and 3D printers, this seems like a good time to talk about one of the simplest woodworking tools – a carving knife. The Japanese Carving Knife Kit (item 60K1103, $39.90) has just been added by Lee Valley, and it comes as a set of parts that the woodworker gets to assemble and customize.
With this kit plus a few tools and a modest investment in time, a woodworker can create a custom-made, full-tang carving knife that will last a lifetime. One can carve the handle to suit one’s grip, and even personalize it with incised or burned designs. Made in Japan with a 1-3/4″ carbon-steel blade that comes honed and ready for use, the kit includes unfinished beech handle scales that are CNC-machined to a well-defined outline that can be sculpted to the final shape. It also includes brass Chicago bolts to affix the handle scales. And in case of mishaps when shaping or mounting the handle, Lee Valley offers replacement scales separately. Supplied with a sheath and step-by-step instructions, the kit makes an outstanding gift or an engaging project, and of course a superb knife.
