31 Jul Japanese Curved Bladed Carving Knife
Garrett Wade had such a great response to the Rare Japanese Craft and Whittling Knife (purple handle, right in photo) that they decided to add a curved-blade version of this popular tool. Shown at left in the photo, the yellow-handled Japanese Curved Bladed Carving Knife (item 36J02.33, $109) has all the features of the original including a full tang blade made of three laminated steel layers that is typical of the Kiradashi style, and a 2-inch double-beveled cutting surface. The result is an exceedingly sharp and beautifully balanced blade. With its comfortable and distinctive yellow nylon-wrapped handle, it’s a pleasure to hold and to work with, and easy to find on a crowded bench. It can be used for shaping, trimming, carving, or any cut that requires precision. It measures 6-¼” long overall.
The original straight tool is a traditional craft knife, specially designed to give total control for carving wood. It has a long 4″ handle and relatively short, 2-½” blade, so that one can get closer to the work and gain greater control. This handle is also wrapped in woven cord (purple), and a generous bolster keeps fingers on the handle as one works. It is 6-½” overall, and the blade is very sharp. It has a thin vinyl cover meant to protect during shipping, but doesn’t include a lasting cover. This is a lovely tool that is completely hand made.
