07 Dec Make Shop Vacuum Hoses Work with Tool Dust Ports
One of the most frustrating little tasks in a woodshop is making connectiond from a dust collection system to small, portable tools. In the WoodEzine shop, we’ve always used plumbing fittings from the hardware store to connect small sanders to a portable shop vacuum, and it does work amazingly well. But several of the other portable tools in the shop have strange oblong or over/undersized dust ports that make it hard to fit standard plastic plumbing fittings.
A new gizmo from FastCap Products is an adjustable adapter that lets a woodworker hook up a shop vac to anything from a random orbit sander to a miter saw. Invented by cabinetmaker Stephen Lothrop, the UNI-VAC (catalog item UNI-VAC, $18) is the ultimate shop vacuum accessory. The super flexible rubber grips around most sizes and shapes of vacuum ports. It adapts to most table saws, routers, miter saws, sanders, and the list goes on! Innovative locking teeth secure the UNI-VAC in place, and then the fixed end attaches around all vacuum hoses with an inner diameter (ID) of 2-1/4”.
