14 May Makita’s New GSL02 is a 40 Volt Brushless 8‑1/2″ Dual‑Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
Last month we told you about Makita’s new XGT® system of high powered 40/80 Volt cordless tools, and among the new products in this line that were introduced this month is an impressive miter saw. Its Makita-built brushless motor delivers 4800 RPMs, which is faster than many corded saws. It has a large 2-3/4″ x 12-1/4″ cutting capacity at 90 degrees, and the LED light actually casts the shadow of the saw blade onto the material exactly where it will cut. The saw is also AWS® (Auto-start Wireless) capable, so it can be set up for wireless power-on/off communication between it and a dust extractor. AWS is intelligent communication that eliminates cords and excessive noise, since the dust extractor runs only when the tool is running.
The new saw comes as a tool only (item GSL02Z), or as a kit (GSL02M1) that includes a 40 Volt XGT® Lithium-Ion 4.0Ah battery, a charger, an 8-1/2″ saw blade, a vertical vice, a dust bag and a hex wrench.
The saw’s rail-forward design maximizes workspace when the miter saw is positioned flush against a wall. It can tackle miters from 0 to 60 degrees left and right, and bevels from 0 to 48 left and right. It comes with Automatic Speed Change™ technology that adjusts the cutting speed and torque under load for optimum performance, and a soft start to suppress start-up reaction (for smoother cuts and longer gear life). The extension wings retract for easy storage and there’s an electric brake.
The saw comes with dual dust collection ports and a bevel angle lock and release dial at the front of the too, for easy access and repositioning. There’s on-board hex wrench storage for blade changes, a 5/8” arbor, and the saw has a shipping weight of 48.51 lbs.
XGT is engineered to deliver high power to take on high-demand applications, allowing users to completely transition to a cordless job site. XGT tools are equipped with advanced brushless motor engineering, intelligent digital communication and superior durability features. The digital communication within XGT optimizes performance to provide up to two times longer sustained power under heavy-load applications. It also actively monitors and protects against overload, over-discharge and overheating. XGT tools and batteries are designed with a multi-layer contact interface for more constant power delivery, to take on high-current demands. The batteries have rigid rails with impact-resistant construction to secure the battery to the tool, and a Rapid Charger is available with a dual-fan design that circulates air through the battery to cool it and the circuit board quickly, for faster charging. A digital display indicates the battery charge level (-80%, +80%, 100%), and the Rapid Charger has a built-in chip that helps control current, voltage, and temperature.
There’s a 3-year limited warranty on the tool, battery, and charger.
