Massive Sinker Redwood Slabs from Hearne Hardwoods

Located in Oxford, Pennsylvania, Hearne Hardwoods carries more than one hundred species of domestic and exotic hardwood lumber, and it is one of the largest specialty lumberyards in the world. The company’s products include logs, live edge boards, lumber, guitar parts, veneer, flooring and much more.

This week, Hearne put a huge sinker redwood log through its sawmill. According to Furch Guitars in Nashville, Tennessee, “sinker redwood is a prized tone-wood that produces a highly resonant rich sound with warm undertones. The wood is harvested from giant aged redwood trees that have been hidden for more than a century at the bottom of the riverbeds of Californian rivers.”

Giant is an understatement here. The log yielded slabs that range from 3-1/4” to 4-1/4” thick, and they’re 25” to 60″ wide. Yup, five feet! Plus, they’re up to 302″ (more than 25 feet) long.

Hearne’s live-edge slabs are sawn as flitches. That means slabs (boards) from a single log are cut and stored together: they’re stacked and kept in order. This lets the customer buy slabs with matching grain and color. In architectural millwork terms, they’re flitch-matched and/or book-matched. Usually this involves cutting the log from side to side, producing the live edges. On occasion, to maximize quality and figure, the log will be rotated while being cut and this produces a sawn edge that is usually straightened during the furniture building process.

The majority of Hearne’s inventory that’s listed online is kiln dried. A few select species have been air-dried only, to prevent checking or due to the nature of the wood (and if that’s the case, the company will say so in the board description). All walnut slabs and walnut lumber can only be sold kiln dried with the bark removed. This applies to all members of the walnut family (Juglans) which include but are not limited to black walnut, butternut, English walnut, European walnut, Claro walnut and Persian walnut.

The staff is inviting customers and potential customers to join them for the 2021 Hearne Hardwoods Open House on October 1st and 2nd. They will be performing live sawmill demonstrations each day. Check the website for details.
