12 Apr New 25″ Planer from South Bend
A new industrial duty thickness planer from Grizzly/South Bend (item SB1118, currently on sale for $12,995) comes with a 15 HP motor and a helical cutterhead with carbide inserts. It has 25″ x 9″ planing capacity and electronic table height controls with digital presets. The 6-row cutterhead has 174 indexable carbide inserts. With a helical setup the inserts are positioned at a slight angle. This produces a shearing action (as opposed to cutting “straight-on”), and results in smoother finish, reduced tear-out in figured woods, and smoother operation. South Bend says that “many species of wood come out looking like they have been sanded”. The digital table height controls allow for the thinnest of shavings to the heaviest of cuts with dead-on accuracy and repeatability every time. And the variable-speed feed provides control to dial in just the right feed rate for the job at hand. The SB1118 also features a manual override for the table height, heavy-duty precision-ground cast-iron tables, and a segmented chip breaker. It comes with a 2-year warranty. The main motor is wired for 220V/440V (it’s prewired for 220V, and South Bend can rewire it to 440V in a few days for a fee of $250), 3-phase, 37A/18.5A. The feed motor is 1/2 HP, and the table elevation motor is 3/4 HP. The minimum stock thickness is 1/4″ and the minimum stock length is 10″. The maximum cutting depth is 1/8″ on a single pass. The variable speed dial is on the control pedestal, the wings are cast iron, and there’s a magnetic switch with thermal overload protection. There are anti-kickback fingers, an oil bath for the drive gears, and a triple belt drive. The cutterhead diameter is 3-1/2” and it runs at 4900 RPM (the variable feed rate is 10-30 FPM). The table with extensions measures 25-1/8″ x 69-5/8″, and the SB1118 has a 6” dust port. The machine’s overall dimensions are 54-1/2″ W x 57″ D x 54-1/2″ H and the footprint is 24-1/2″ x 47-1/2″. It has an approximate shipping weight of 2,057 lbs. and $575 freight to the lower 48 states only. (Freight to AK, HI, PR and other US Territories will be quoted at current rates and additional charges may apply).
