Online Classes in November

Highland Woodworking is offering two evening online classes in November for just $49 apiece. The first is titled “Turning a Bowl – From Simple to Live Edge”, which is being presented by turner Pat Matranga on Wednesday the 4th.  Pat will “demystify the bowl turning process one step at a time: First she will teach you how to evaluate and choose the right wood for bowl turning. Then she will show you tricks and tips for mounting the stock to a faceplate or a chuck, so your stock turns smoothly. Pat will also teach you to select and use bowl turning tools so that your cuts leave great surfaces where you want them.

The second class is “Carving Basic Period Furniture Elements – The Ball and Claw Foot” with Alf Sharp on Monday evening, the 16th. This is the third in a series, but the other two are not prerequisites. Here, Alf will concentrate on teaching the basics of carving the ball and claw foot. The Cabriole leg is one of the most identifiable elements of Queen Anne style furniture, and the ball and claw foot is the ultimate element adorning this traditional leg. The highest achievement is when there is a pierced space between the claw and the ball, so the ball is actually held in the claw. Alf will teach the tips, tricks and techniques necessary for the carving of this element. Click here for more details…
