24 Sep Quick Corners Clamps from MLCS
MLCS has just started carrying this clever workbench helper that has actually been around a while (we found them on the Walmart and Amazon sites, too). The spring clamps (item 9971, $24.95) help a woodworker set up joinery, holds parts while gluing, lets you work out dimensions and mark up parts, and generally adds a second pair of hands when needed. It’s a four-piece corner clamp set where the 90-degree, heavy duty quick clamps will hold stock up to 3/4″ thick. And because they’re spring-loaded, they’re naturally adjustable so they can work with different stock thicknesses at the same time. That’s handy in case your drawers have, say, 1/2” thick sides and 3/4” fronts. They’re also ideal for tasks such as holding picture frames together while the miters are being glued and pinned, or for holding a permanent shelf in a T position while it is being screwed in. They’re small (about 3” in either direction) so they’re not going to handle large parts. They can be operated with one hand, But for small or lightweight construction, they’re an inexpensive solution to an annoying problem.
A similar solution is the Wetols Angle Clamp (top right in photo), which has a threaded handle and a swiveling jaw that accommodates different thicknesses.
