05 Feb Set of Three Shapton Stones with Holder
Lee Valley has just added a set of three GlassStone (GS) HR brand sharpening stones to its catalog. The set (61M0350, $254) comes with a field holder and is designed for woodworkers who would like a good general-purpose set for maintaining and sharpening a primary bevel and polishing a secondary bevel. The stones are 210mm × 70mm × 11mm (8-1/4″ × 2-3/4″ × 7/16″) overall with 5mm (just over 3/16”) of usable abrasive thickness, and each stone weighs about 14 oz (400g). The set includes three stones: one 29.40µ 500x for grinding, one 7.35µ 2000x for honing, and one 0.92µ 16,000x for polishing. The symbol “µ” means micron.
The field holder weighs 1.43 lb (650g). When it is turned upside down, three glass stones can be stacked between the feet, which is convenient for storage or transport. In use, it provides a good working surface height of 2-3/8″ (60mm). Shapton stones are great at sharpening because of their high abrasive content – you can form an edge in no time. They don’t need to be soaked in water before use. Just splash on some water and start sharpening in seconds. Their unique bonding technology allows the abrasives to perform at an optimum level, resulting in long-lasting sharpening stones. And there’s a broad range of grits available through Lee Valley that allows users to select stones suitable to each blade’s composition and shape.
GlassStones exploit the straightness of float glass to deliver a perfectly flat, hard base. Every time a blade is sharpened on an oil or water sharpening stone, the stone itself changes shape over time. That doesn’t happen with glass. Shapton Co. Ltd. is located in Tochigi, Japan.
