08 May South Bend 26″ Single Phase Dual Drum Sander
Built for industrial-level production work in small woodshops, the new 5 HP variable speed sander (item SB1102 in the Grizzly catalog) is listed at $4,250 + $229 freight. It can sand workpieces up to 4″ thick by 26″ wide and the dual drum means that both rough and finish sanding can be done in one pass. An external micro-adjustment knob for the outfeed drum provides the ultimate control for that final pass. The table elevation is easily adjusted with a large handwheel and a four-screw lifting system. There’s an industrial-duty rubber conveyor belt that’s similar to those found on large wide belt sanders, and the operator can monitor the performance of the SB1102 with an Amp/load meter that’s conveniently located on the pedestal-mounted control panel. Other features such as hook-and-loop drums and dual 4″ dust ports make this the perfect choice for professionals or serious hobbyists. The sanding drum motor is 220V and 25A, while the conveyor motor is 1/3 HP. The minimum board thickness is 1/8″ (Ed note: luthiers and others who use veneer and thin stock often use a sled to get around this on planers and wide belt sanders). The surface speed of the 6” diameter drums is 2300 FPM, and the conveyor feed rate is variable from 0 to 20 FPM. The drums take 3″ x 176″ hook-and-loop paper that’s available from Grizzly (and from other sources, often in longer lengths). The machine’s overall dimensions are 50-1/2″ W x 36-1/2″ D x 57″ H, and the approximate shipping weight is 498 lbs. It comes with a 2-year warranty, a hinged hood for easy drum access, and U.S. based customer service and technical support.
