12 Aug Three New Tools for Precision Woodworking from MLCS
MLCS has added a set of precision set-up blocks, a combination square and a V-block for the drill press to its catalog.
The 15-piece Set-Up Blocks (item 9719, listed at $74.95) come in a fitted padded case, and they’re designed to make it easy to accurately position and set up blades, bits, fences and gauges. There are easy-to-read laser-etched labels on each block. The solid blue anodized aluminum construction is easy to find on a crowded workbench and soft enough to prevent damage to router bits and saws. The blocks are sized at 1/16″, 3/32″, 1/8″, 5/32″, 3/16″, 7/32″, 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 7/16″, 15/32″, 1/2″, 23/32″ and 3/4″, and there’s a large 1″ x 2″ x 3″ block for combining with smaller ones.
The new combination square (item 424-0143, $79.99) includes four elements, one of which is the premium, hardened and tempered 12″ satin chrome steel blade. There’s also a cast iron center finding V-head, a cast iron 180-degree protractor head, and the main square/miter head with its 45 and 90-degree ground faces. That, too, is cast iron. All three adjustable heads will lock securely in any position along the blade, which has etched graduations in 1/8″, 1/16″, 1/32″ and 1/64″. The protractor head moves in both directions, and the combination square is packaged in a padded plastic storage case.
The third new item from MLCS is the Center-It drill press V-block (item 448-5990, $24.99), which is ideal for holding dowels, chair legs and other parts securely while marking, cutting, and drilling them. It will easily hold and then accurately center round stock, and the aluminum V-shaped block is 5″ long, 4″ wide, and 1-3/4″ high. The base has four slots to mount the jig to a drill press or workbench, and the outside edges of the V are grooved to make controlling the jig very easy during handheld applications.
