Tough Little Drill Driver Has Metal Gears

Ridgid’s new R8701B has been out for a couple of months and is receiving solid reviews. The $99 tool is an 18-Volt subcompact, brushless ½” drill/driver that has all-metal gears even though it’s 30% lighter and smaller than the R86009 model. Built tough, it has a single sleeve ratcheting chuck and the motor delivers 400 inch-pounds of torque in two speed ranges (0 to 450 and 0 to 1,750 RPM). The tool is backed by the industry’s only lifetime service agreement where a woodworker registers within 90 days of purchase and receives free parts and service for life. It comes with a double-ended bit, a bag and an operator’s manual. There’s a 24-position clutch ring for adjusting the torque to the task. A decent LED light provides improved visibility in confined spaces and low light situations, and there’s a reversible belt hook and an on-board bit holder. The R8701B is 100% Compatible with all of Ridgid’s 18-Volt batteries and chargers.
