Ulmia Stepped Rabbet Plane from Peck

Ulmia Stepped Rabbet Plane from Peck

The Ulmia Stepped Rabbet Plane (item 123-8530, $76.50) from Peck Tool is useful for many tasks such as planing into corners, cleaning up rabbets or fitting parts. The body is hornbeam (a hardwood in the birch family) and the sole measures 155mm (6-1/8″) x 30mm (1-1/8″). The 30mm (1-3/16″) iron is fitted with a chip-breaker and is machine sharpened to 25 degrees. Final sharpening is required. Wood body planes provide elegant simplicity by delivering time tested designs coupled with modern manufacturing methods and materials.

Before metal adjusters, plane irons were adjusted to very precise tolerances by a simple tap on the iron for a deeper cut. A tap on the heel of the plane reduced the cut. This simple process is still in use around the world and preferred by many craftsmen as an alternative to mechanical adjusters.

Wooden planes are also easier to tune and maintain than their metal counterparts, and they require simple woodworking skills and tools. This plane weighs 1 lb. and measures 6-1/2” × 6” × 1-1/2”.
