13 May Variable Speed Large Wheel Grinder
Woodworkers shy away from most bench grinders for sharpening because, they rotate at high speed and have small diameter (6 or 8”) stones. Those two factors create a lot of heat and can blue the tool steel. Plus, a larger diameter makes for a better hollow grind, so any secondary bevel doesn’t require a lot of work or time.
South Bend (Grizzly) has introduced an industrial quality bench grinder (item SB1494, $794 plus $179 shipping) that has a 10” diameter stone and a rigorously tested, high-quality, 1-1/2 HP motor. It draws 110- or 220-Volt current (7 or 3.5 Amps), and it has variable speed from 2400 RPM all the way down to 900 RPM. The spindle speed is displayed on a digital readout.
The grinder has dual dust ports with spark guards, dual eye shields, and an adjustable LED work light. It comes with aluminum oxide 40 and 60 grit stones that can be easily replaced with a white stone for hand tool sharpening (1” shaft). The shipping weight is about 149 lbs. and the heavy-duty, cast-iron machine comes with a 2-year warranty which covers parts and factory defects. The customer service and technical support teams are U.S. based, and parts and accessories for the bench grinder are available online and are shipped from the South Bend parts warehouse in Springfield, MO. Its overall dimensions are 24″ L x 17-1/2″ W x 18-1/2″ H.
