Woodcraft Offers Carbide Insert Turning Tools

For new turners who don’t want to sharpen, Parkersburg, West Virginia based Woodcraft Supply, Inc. is offering a new 3-piece carbide insert set under its proprietary WoodRiver® brand. The tools in the set (item 171861, $139.99) are approximately 11″ overall length, with an 8″ handle and a 3″ tool bar. In our opinion, they look remarkably like the Easy Wood Tools starter tools (Rougher, Finisher and Detailer) that Woodcraft also carries, although those are longer at 12-1/2″. The new WoodRiver tools have beech handles with rubber grips (that the Easy Wood Tools don’t have), and 5/16″ solid stainless-steel shafts. The replaceable carbide insert on each tool is easily rotated to expose a sharp cutting edge by loosening the T15 Torx head screw with the included key and rotating the cutter. Once the insert is dull, a turner can replace it and completely eliminate sharpening. The set includes a Round Tip Tool for inside curves, a Square Tip Tool that the company says is ideal for pen turning as well as convex (outside curve) areas, and a Diamond Tip Tool that is ideal for creating tight coves and beads. The catalog entry says this latter works as a parting tool, but we don’t feel that’s quite accurate as the cut is V-shaped and a parting cut is parallel. Also included with the new tools is an extra square insert for removing large amounts of material quickly, or creating tenons and recesses accurately and efficiently. Currently, the company says the tools will begin shipping on February 25, 2021.
