09 Nov Work Lights and Laser Levels from Makita
October saw several new tool introductions from Makita, some of which were related to outdoor/gardening work. Of interest to woodworkers, and especially cabinet installers, are a pair of cordless 18 Volt LXT® tower lights that extend to 7-1/4 feet tall and fold up for easy transporting. There’s the Tower Work Light (DML813), and the Tower Work/Multi-Directional Light (DML814). Both have dust and water-resistant construction (IP55-rated when using a battery) for improved operation in harsh job site conditions. The DML813 features an adjustable head that rotates 220-degrees vertically and pivots 230-degrees horizontally. The DML814 features three adjustable heads that rotate 180-degrees vertically. Each head has L.E.D. lights that effectively illuminate a work area without the high heat of halogens. They deliver 3,000/1,700/900 lumens on High/Medium/Low settings respectively. The tower lights provide up to 10 hours of continuous illumination with one 5.0Ah battery on low, and up to 2 hours on high (the battery and charger are not included). The lights have a convenient shoulder strap and handles for easy transportation.
The other innovation is a pair of 360-degree red and green lasers. These are 12 Volt max CXT® Self-Leveling 360° 3-plane lasers. The one with a red beam comes as item SK700D (tool only), or SK700DNAJ (kit with a carrying case, battery and charger). The green beam version stock numbers are SK700GD (tool) and SK700GDNAJ (kit). These lasers are multi-directional, so they provide the ability to apply a reference position on all four walls within a room. They have one horizontal and two vertical planes, which provide 6 cross-points. This allows the user to perform plumb, level, align and square applications without having to reposition the laser. They provide sharp laser lines with +/- 1/16” at 33’ for best-in-class accuracy. The SK700D has a visibility range of 82’ and the SK700GD has a visibility range of 115’, but both can be detected up to 230’ with a detector. The lasers also feature a fine vertical line adjustment knob for increased accuracy and an eccentric base to adjust the vertical line while maintaining the plumb point position. The integrated pendulum lock enables slope or incline applications by deactivating the self-leveling function. A simplified two-button interface provides easy operation of the lasers. A user can adjust the brightness of the laser, and a low setting conserves battery power and extends run time. The SK700D red laser provides up to 22 hours of continuous run time with a 4.0Ah battery, while the SK700GD green laser provides up to 14 hours. Both lasers are dust and water resistant with IP54 rating, and they have a rubberized housing over-mold and highly protected laser windows. A magnetic bracket with integrated 1/4″ and 5/8” threads lets the operator secure the laser to metal or wood surfaces, or tripods.
